Today’s children have a lot of options when it comes to games and toys available to them this day. Everything from singing stuffed animals to realistic video games and educational apps. It can be intimidating for the elders in their world to think of ways to connect with kids and how they like to play these days but you’d be surprised how much they enjoy the games of old.
Back in the day, you learned card games, played jacks, did hand clapping games, played marbles. Today’s kids can enjoy all the same things you did they just don’t know they exist. You can have some fun and teach them a few things by showing them how to play the favorites you loved when you were little.
You might like to teach them to play Solitaire with a real deck of cards instead of on their tablet. Cribbage is another great game and it’s good practice for kids in adding numbers and developing strategy. Besides, what kid doesn’t love a game that allows them to “Skunk” their opponent. There’s Go Fish and War.
There are also the old hand clapping and sing-song games girls played back then. Remember Miss Mary Mack? Here’s a video of how it goes – just in case you can’t quite remember it. Look at how that little girl is grinning. So sweet.
Kids would enjoy Dominoes, hopscotch, and double-dutch jump rope. You can make balloon animals for them. Or how about a balloon Pirate Sword. Here’s a video for how to do that.
There is plenty you can teach the kids if you just remember back to what you loved to do when you were a kid. Go ahead and have fun. The kids will remember their time with you long into their adult years.
